When you choose a locally owned business, you’re helping create jobs, strengthening our local economy, supporting entrepreneurs, and investing in the people who give Victoria its unique character. According to the Government of Canada, small and medium-sized businesses make up 99% of Canadian businesses and employ 64% of the private sector workforce, making them an essential part of our communities. (ISED Canada)
At Think Local First Victoria, we believe supporting local doesn’t have to mean spending more. Small actions, repeated often, can have a lasting impact.
1. Shop Local First
Before heading to a large chain or ordering online, check whether a locally owned business carries what you need. You may discover a new favourite while keeping your dollars circulating within the community.

2. Dine at Independent Restaurants and Cafés
Victoria is home to an incredible collection of independent restaurants, cafés, breweries, bakeries, and food producers. Choosing locally owned establishments helps support jobs and keeps our neighbourhoods vibrant.
3. Leave a Positive Review
A five-star Google review or Facebook recommendation takes only a few minutes but can significantly influence someone else’s decision to visit a local business.
4. Follow and Share on Social Media
Not every form of support requires opening your wallet. Liking, commenting on, and sharing posts helps local businesses reach new audiences through social media algorithms.

5. Purchase Gift Cards
Buying gift cards provides businesses with immediate cash flow while giving you a thoughtful gift for birthdays, holidays, or future visits.
6. Attend Local Events
Farmers’ markets, community festivals, networking events, art walks, concerts, and pop-up markets showcase local businesses while building stronger community connections.
7. Choose Canadian Products
When shopping, take a closer look at where products are made or sourced. Labels such as “Product of Canada” and “Made in Canada” can help you make informed purchasing decisions. The Government of Canada also recommends checking company websites and product descriptions to verify Canadian ownership and origin. (ISED Canada)
8. Buy Directly
Whenever possible, order directly from a local business instead of through third-party marketplaces or delivery apps. This helps businesses avoid additional service fees and retain more of every sale. (ISED Canada)

9. Recommend Your Favourite Businesses
Word-of-mouth remains one of the most powerful marketing tools. Tell your friends, family, neighbours, and colleagues about businesses that have provided excellent products or service.
Recommend Think Local First! Send us an intro email to hello@thinklocalvictoria.com and we’ll send our Membership Brochure over for their consideration.
10. Join a Local Business Community
Supporting local isn’t only for consumers. Business owners can strengthen their own success by collaborating with other local organizations, sharing referrals, and participating in networking opportunities.
At Think Local First Victoria, our members are committed to building a stronger local economy through collaboration, education, advocacy, and meaningful business relationships.
