The criteria for Think Local First membership are:

  1. The business is privately held.
  2. Business owners (totalling greater than 50% of the business ownership) live in Greater Victoria.
  3. Your business is located and registered in the Greater Victoria Area (between Sooke and Sidney).
  4. Your business has the ability to make independent decisions related to location, purchasing, business practices, distribution, and marketing. Unfortunately, we do not accept franchise businesses as members as they are often restricted in the products, business name and marketing they can use.
  5. Your business pays all its own expenses, including rent and marketing expenses, without direct assistance from a corporate headquarters.
  6. ​Businesses located in Greater Victoria that meet all the criteria above except for having 50% of the business ownership living in Greater Victoria may be considered for membership by the Board provided that 50% of the business owners live on Vancouver Island.
  7. Your business must agree to operate with ethical business practices and to make an effort to provide a high level of customer service.

We vet every business to make sure that they are actually locally owned in order to maintain the integrity of our organization.

Annual Membership Dues

There is an annual membership fee of $250 for a business with one location, each additional location is $50, up to a maximum $450 (even if you have more than 4 locations). These dues are used to fund marketing and administration costs but most of our work is done by volunteers within the business community.

As a member of Think Local First, you get:

  • Brochures and window decals
  • A listing for your business on our mobile app
  • A spot on our website along with a business listing
  • Regular cross-promotion on social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter)
  • Access to standing banners, digital logos and other Think Local First media items
  • To participate in various promotions throughout the year  such as our Annual General Meeting, Think Local Week, and co-op advertising opportunities)
  • Monthly mixers hosted by a member business plus we are adding quarterly mixers on the Saanich Peninsula/Sidney and morning mixers on the Westshore
  • We hold a new member breakfast every quarter at the Dutch Bakery & Diner (breakfast for the new member is provided)
  • The opportunity to connect with other local, independent businesses to find ways to collaborate and support each other in your success

    One location is $250 per year and each additional location is another $50. Dues are capped at $450 per year for 4 or more locations. GST is extra.
